Los Angeles gets a lot of praise for its sunsets, but it’s time our moonrises got a little credit too.

Leg braces used by Franklin Roosevelt

FDR could not stand without the support of leg braces like these. They were strapped to his legs and locked at the knee. These braces weigh approximately ten pounds.

In order to appear to “walk” in public, Roosevelt used a cane and a strong companion’s arm to support his weight while he pitched his body forward. This required skill and considerable upper body strength, developed through practice and exercise.

Fascinating.

Celebrating Victory Day

Today, millions of people around the world celebrate Victory Day, the day when Nazi Germany surrendered in 1945. Due to time differences, the holiday is celebrated on May 8 in most parts of the world and May 9 in the former Soviet states.

The holiday remains extremely significant in the former Soviet region due to the gravity of World War II: an estimated 28,000,000 people were killed in the Soviet Union alone. Regardless of faith, political affiliation or nationality, people come together to honor their war veterans. Hundreds of military parades complete with armored vehicles, fireworks, choreographed marching and speeches will be held in various cities. I’m always amazed when I see these numbers in print - the loss of human souls in Russia during the second world war - 28,000,000 - staggering. They fought that war in the trenches on their soil; we swooped in at the 11th hour, liberating Jews from death camps true, but the Soviets, they gave dearly to the cause and still mourn their heavy losses.

San Francisco is known for eclectic architecture, steep hills and sweeping bridges, but above all else it’s known for its fog. Unsuspecting tourists visiting in the summer months may not quite welcome San Francisco’s fog with open arms, but those who reside in Fog City have grown accustomed to waking up with a cool grey blanket of fog hugging the rooftops. And within the Instagram community, many have adopted the idea that the fog has a witty personality of his own through the popularity of @karlthefog: the Instagram account belonging to San Francisco’s fog.
